What is an international driving permit?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of a domestic driver's license into many different languages by the same country that allows the owner to operate a personal vehicle in any country that recognizes the type of driving licence. It is slightly larger in size than a passport, with photos and personal information attached. IDP regulated by the United Nations certifies that you are the holder of a valid driver's license in your country of origin.

To be valid, the IDP must be accompanied by a valid driving license issued in the applicant's country of residence. An IDP is not required if the driver's domestic license meets the requirements of the 1949 or 1968 convention; the domestic license can be used directly in a foreign jurisdiction that is a party to that convention. In addition, other arrangements eliminate the need for an IDP in some countries, such as the European driving license valid within the European Economic Area.
